中国布老虎是一种由布和填充物做成的手工艺品。自古时候就已流行，尤其是在山东、河南、山西和陕西。布老虎在2008年列入了中国非物质文化遗产。
Chinese cloth tiger is a kind of handicraft that made of cloth and the filler. It has been widely popular since ancient times, especially in Shandong, Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi. And it was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of China in 2008.
“不肖形似，而求神似”是中国传统艺术的精髓。因此，布老虎没有统一固定的图案，并且人们还有各种各样的填充物可以选择。比如：棉花，锯末，麸糠，艾，当归等其他中药材。当人们在制作布老虎的时候，通常都会将原形做些夸张化。缩小体型，简化四肢，使头颅、眼睛、嘴巴和尾巴变大。因此，布老虎的五官常常看起来童气可爱。除此之外，布老虎还有多种样式，比如：单头虎、双头虎、子母虎、情侣虎、虎头枕等等。
“Unworthy to be similar in shape, but worthy to be similar in spirit.” is the essence of the Chinese traditional art. So, there are no uniform patterns for the cloth tiger, and people can choose different kinds of fillers such as cotton, sawdust, bran, mugwort, angelica and other Chinese herbals. When people making the cloth tiger, they usually exaggerate the original shape of the tiger by shrinking the body, simplifying the limbs, and make the tiger’s head, eyes, mouth and tail bigger. Therefore, the facial features of cloth tiger are often cute and childlike. Besides, cloth tiger has a variety of forms, for example single-head tiger, double-head tiger, mother-and-child tigers, couple tigers, pillow tiger, etc.
在中国文化里，老虎是种威猛的动物，它额前的斑纹又与汉字“王”相似。所以人们相信老虎可以驱赶鬼邪，祛病消灾。而中国的父母，总是希望自己的孩子能拥有最好的一切。这使得布老虎成为孩子们有趣有寓的玩具。在春节期间，父母还会给孩子们戴虎头帽，穿虎头鞋，以此来祝愿孩子一生健康。布老虎还能作为家中的幸运摆件。因为中文里“虎”的发音跟“福”和“富”相近，使得老虎成为平安有福的吉祥象征，以及家院财富的守护者。
In Chinese culture, tiger is a mighty animal, and the stripes on its forehead is similar to the Chinese character “王(King)” . So, people believe that the tiger can drive out the evil spirits, avoid diseases and disasters. And since Chinese parents are always want their kids to have the best, it makes the cloth tiger a fun and meaningful toy for kids. During the Spring Festival, parents will dress their kids in tiger hat and tiger shoes to wish them have a healthy life. What’s more, the cloth tiger can also be a lucky ornament in the house. Because the pronunciation of tiger in Chinese “虎” is sounds like “福(blessing)” and “富(rich)” that the tiger becomes an auspicious symbol of peace, good fortune and the protection of family and wealth.
